Discount Plantation Shutters
Discount plantation Shutters are usually made from two entirely different materials. One is good, makes a great
looking shutter and will withstand the ravishes of daily use while the other is a disaster and should be avoided at
all cost.
The m
aterial that should be avoided at all cost is the composite faux shutter. The
composite material is made of sawdust, wood chips and glue. The advantage to using this material is that it's cheap
and stays straight. This is great for cornice boards and stationary fixtures that don't have hinges and moveable
parts. In time the moveable parts in shutters will wear out, get very lose and eventually fall
apart.
I know there are a lot of companies out there that make composite shutters and when they are first installed
they look great as long as everything went in the right place at installation. Down here in South Florida where I
live the humidity does a number on these types of shutters and once the humidity gets a foot hold there is no
turning back. The shutter will begin to swell and bulge in places and eventually fall apart.
My advice is two run from composite shutters. The cheap price will soon be forgotten and the swelling and
misalignment will take over and lead to disappointment and anger.
One the other hand there is the vinyl discount plantation shutter that is about as maintenance free as you can
get. These faux plantation shutters look great, keep there shape, are easy to clean and a true joy to own. As a
matter of fact if you take a white
vinyl shutter and a white wood shutter made by the same caring company you will not be able to tell the
difference. The vinyl shutter will last as long or even longer that the wood shutter.
I have always said that the only way you can tell the difference is to bite them. The wood will be softer a lot
softer. This is a great feature if your shutters are going to be in a spot where they will be subject to a lot of
use and abuse.
The big problem with vinyl discount plantation shutters is in the color. If you are going to be using white
shutters, the majority of shutters made are white, there is no problem. The problem is with the darker colors,
especially the ones that are supposed to look like wood. They Don't! They don't even come close. So if you want a
true wood color use the real thing. Don't even bother looking at the vinyl plantation shutter.
There are a number of companies that sell discount plantation shutters but for day in and day out quality,
service and price here is where I would go.
